Google Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) is a game changer for digital marketing in 2017, writes Aimee Sanderson, Digital Content Strategist at Bespoke.
Mobile content has been giving digital marketers a headache for some time now, namely because we just can’t get our mobile content to load quickly enough.
We are all too familiar with losing patience whilst waiting for a tweet or news story to load on our devices. What makes it even worse is that large numbers of potential customers are missing out on viewing and interacting with our content.
Google AMP has provided us with an answer.
What is AMP?
AMP serves searches on mobiles and tablets by creating a simplified version of your website. This is achieved by adding code to your content. Highly ranked AMP websites will display as a carousel at the top of the search screen, without needing to be clicked on.
Mobile performance will be a big focus for Google with regards search rankings which means they’ll actually prefer websites that have AMP versions of their pages. Crucially, they will be ranking sites with AMP higher as a result.
eCommerce websites will be ranked using the same criteria from April 2017. So if your own selling pages aren’t AMP-friendly, it could potentially create a dent in profits by reducing your organic conversion rates.
How can AMP help my business?
User experience isn’t the only things that is affected by lack of speed, it’s also a contributing factor to reduced conversion rates, harming accessibility to users with slower internet connections. AMP enables mobile-optimised content that has been published on one occasion to load instantly almost everywhere.
By optimising your blogs, product pages and article for mobile devices, you are ensuring that the door to your business is always open.
AMP can keep you one step ahead and ensures that your products can be seen within a matter of moments. This coupled with the fact that it also enhances your chance of reaching the top of Google’s search rankings.
What are the next steps for AMP?
You may have already heard of AMP. It’s been on the radar for some time now. However, in our experience, Google rarely make an announcement unless they are serious about the results. In our eyes, AMP is guaranteed to be a fantastic return on investment and a welcome solution to the problem of speed on devices.
Here’s a breakdown of what to expect from Accelerated Mobile Pages:
○ Pages that are cached by Google – which means load times are reduced even further
Mobile pages that load up to 4x faster
○ Pages that are still able to serve forms and images that point toward CTAs
○ Pages that are likely to rank higher in Google searches
