Facebook is set to revamp its news feed tool once more, sparking rumours that the social network will ramp up features for smartphones as it looks to boost mobile ad revenues.
Press invitations have been sent out on Friday summoning media to “see a new look for News Feed” at an event set for 7 March, starting at 10am PST at the Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to announce the changes.
The News Feed is the ‘homepage’ of Facebook where users land after logging on or clicking the Facebook logo. The desktop version currently shows a tailored selection of users’ status updates, pictures, videos and more in a long, largely chronologically ordered single column.
Off to the right is a real-time news ticker that shows every bit of activity that your friends have posted.
Meanwhile the mobile version shows just a single column with the choice to have either the ‘top stories’ or most recent stories shown.
Facebook hasn’t hinted at what the new News Feed might look like or add in terms of features.
However TechCrunch recently reported that it had seen a new mobile News Feed design that looked like a cross between Flipboard and Microsoft Metro, with content filling the entirety of the screen and Facebook’s trademark blue logo hidden from view.
Facebook’s last update was Graph Search with Bing integration, which lets users search using four different categories: People, Places, Photos and Interests.
The feature can also be used for dating and recruitment, Facebook said, so we recommended deleting any crude photos before the feature is rolled out to all.
