Ahead of Sony’s press conference unveiling the Playstation 4, interest in the next-generation console has soared, with data from Experian finding that 1 in every 1,500 searches in the UK last week contained the word ‘Sony’.
According to Experian, UK Internet searches for PlayStation 4 have doubled in the last four weeks.
Only 2% of PlayStation 4 searches included the word ‘Sony’ which indicates that PlayStation has become a strong brand within its own right not necessarily associated with Sony anymore.
Ina ddition, there were 30% more searches for the Xbox 720 last week than the PlayStation 4.
Other data of reference:
1. 25% of all Sony searches last week included the word ‘Xperia’
2. The new Xperia Z model was the most searched for Sony product last week. The most popular word associated with the Xperia Z was ‘review’ as consumers searched for feedback on the latest model
3. Playstation 4 was five times as popular last week as PlayStation 3 by UK searches
James Murray, Digital Insight Manager from Experian Marketing Services commented: “The video games market is in need of some rejuvenation after a pretty dire Christmas where only 8% of product searches were for video games consoles or games. The impending launch of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox 720 has got gamers excited again and the search data shows people are desperate for news and reviews with information about what we can expect from the next generation of gaming consoles. At the moment the Xbox 720 is the more popular of the two new consoles, but this is likely to change if Sony make a major announcement about the PS4 this week.”
