Trump dominated Instagram in election run-up (but Clinton was most engaging)

US President-elect Donald Trump dominated Instagram in the immediate lead-up to the election but Clinton was the most engaging, according to data from Instagram analytics and management platform Iconosquare.

#Trump2016 (2,280,050) received twice as many total posts as #hillary2016 (934,336) in the three days prior to, and including, Election Day on November 8th on the social networking site.

Instagram’s visual medium was a primary reason for Trump’s popularity, with him featuring in 24,020 images and 2,403 videos compared to Clinton’s 12,531 images and 1,171 videos.

Proportionally, Trump’s lead was not as clear cut in terms of engagement. Even though Clinton posted less frequently, had fewer followers and generated less traffic, she secured 808,126 likes and 28,808 comments.

Romain Ouzeau, CEO of Iconosquare, said: “This data gives a real insight into how Instagram can determine public sentiment in an emotionally-charged election campaign. Trump may have dominated the visual aspect of the platform, but Clinton’s engagement rates resonate with the fact she won the popular vote.”
