Google is building an Android-powered operating system code-named Brillo that will run on low-powered devices and requires no screen to function, according to a news report.
The Information reports that Google “is likely to release the software under the Android brand, as the group developing the software is linked to the company’s Android unit.” We’re going to take that to mean “it’s based on Android.”
The technology could make it easier for other companies to build everything from “smart” fridges and light bulbs to garden monitors.
Brillo will be aimed at ultra low-power devices with as little as 64 or 32MB of RAM.
Google also tried to enter the connected home before with Android@Home, but that unit has since been discarded.
The report says Google executives thought that “it was too early” and closed the project.
The new Brillo software could be made official at the company’s I/O developer conference in San Francisco this week.
