Mozilla has shown off a prototype for a $25 (£15) smartphones, aimed at the developing world.
The Firefox browser owner made the announcement at Mobile World Congress, partnering with Chinese chip maker Spreadtrum to produce low-cost Firefox OS-powered smartphones.
Firefox OS is already available in 15 markets on three devices, but Mozilla want to expand this significantly, by entering into the Latin American markets. Also, Deutsche Telekom plans to sell models in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Macedonia and Montenegro.
On top of that – and potentially more lucrative for Mozilla – Chinese network ZTE is also planning to add two new Firefox OS-powered models to its lineup, and says it expects to shift one million of the phones by the end of the year.
“These solutions expand the global accessibility of open web smartphones to first-time and entry-level smartphone buyers by reducing the time and cost required for handset makers to bring these devices to market,” said Spreadtrum in a press statement.
Mozilla said the phone “redefines” the entry-level phone market.
In addition to the $25 smartphone, Mozilla also launched several high-end models, including devices from Huawei and ZTE.
