Google launches Nexus Q cloud media 'ball'

Google has launched Nexus Q, a social streaming device that lets users play content from their Google Play account from the cloud direct to their home stereo and TV systems.

The ball-shaped device has a built in 25w amp so it can pair with speakers.
It can also be integrated with existing home entertainment set up and A/V receiver, whilst the Nexus Q also supports NFC, Bluetooth and WiFi, and runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich, with 1GB RAM and 16GB local storage.
The Nexus Q is currently only available in the US, with a price tag of $299.
Commenting on the launch, Jan Dawson, chief telecoms analyst at Ovum said: “The Nexus Q home media device is on paper very similar to the Apple TV launched in 2007 – $299 for a device that streams content from the cloud and attaches to a TV and other home media devices. The problem is that the current Apple TV sells for $99 and does far more, including mirroring smartphone and tablet screens.
“Google’s decision to manufacturer the device in the US may turn out to be a self-defeating PR move, given that it’s the most logical reason for the inflated $299 price point. Even the Apple TV, of course, doesn’t sell very well, so there’s little hope for Google’s latest venture into the home entertainment space at three times the price.”
Nexus Q has an estimated shipping time of 2 to 3 weeks, but you can register to be notified when the device is available by hitting up Google Play.
