Google’s buying spree continues with Quickoffice and Meebo

Google has bought Quickoffice, an office suite for phones and other mobile devices. The move comes a day after the Internet giant confirmed its long-rumoured acquisition of Meebo.

Google said in its official blog, “We’re happy to announce that we have acquired Quickoffice, a leader in office productivity solutions. Today, consumers, businesses and schools use Google Apps to get stuff done from anywhere, with anyone and on any device. Quickoffice has an established track record of enabling seamless interoperability with popular file formats, and we’ll be working on bringing their powerful technology to our Apps product suite.”
Quickoffice, in an announcement on its Web site, said, “We worked very hard to build Quickoffice as a user friendly, seamless and yet powerful way to view, edit, sync and share documents anywhere, anytime… Now, we are ushering in a new chapter with Google. By combining the magic of Google’s intuitive solutions with Quickoffice’s powerful products, our shared vision for anytime, anywhere productivity can only grow.”
The Quickoffice app costs $15-$20 and approximately 400 million devices are currently equipped with the app. It works on several types of devices, including Apple’s iPhone and iPad and those running Google’s Android software.
Meanwhile, Google confirmed I’ts purchase of Meebo for an undisclosed sum. All Things D first reported rumours about a Google-Meebo acquisition in May – with an alleged asking price of around £65 million.
Founded in 2005, Meebo helps online publishers make their websites more social. Meebo’s browser-based instant messaging client, including the Meebo Bar feature, enables users to chat on various websites like TV Guide, TMZ, and Entertainment Weekly.
The company claims to have built other communications features that are used by about 100 million users in the US. The acquisition of Meebo is likely to bring more features to Google’s social network Google Plus.
“Together with Google, we’re super jazzed to roll up our sleeves and get cracking on even bigger and better ways to help users and website owners alike,” the Meebo team wrote on its company blog.
“With the Meebo team’s expertise in social publisher tools, we believe they will be a great fit with the Google+ team. We look forward to closing the transaction and working with the Meebo team to create more ways for users to engage online,” a Google spokesman stated.
