Microsoft’s online store in India was taken down this week after it was allegedly hacked by a Chinese group calling itself Evil Shadow Team.
The site www.microsoftstore.co.in was offline with a message saying that the company was working to restore access.
The security breach occurred Sunday night. The company declined to comment on the matter, the Times of India daily reported.
The Indian edition of the Microsoft store is maintained and operated by a local company called Quasar Media.
Shortly after the attack, the hackers posted a message on the website saying the ‘unsafe system will be baptized,’ the report said.
The team also posted obscured screenshots of customers’ usernames and passwords, showing that they had been stolen, the Mumbai-based technology website TechTree said.
TechTree said the hackers were a relatively new group, and did not give a reason for their attack.
