Video: Google charts 14-year history of search

Google has released a video that tracks the evolution of its search services over the last 14 years.

The video highlights such milestones as the addition of images, news results, local and country-based results, videos, weather, movie times, Universal Results, Street View, Google Instant and image and voice search to Google’s search engine.
The piece also covers the impact of the September 11 attacks when the search engine was forced to post links to relevant news sites so users could stay up to date.
Google has since updated its technology but at the time had only cached results up to the previous month.
Google says it makes roughly 500 improvements to search each year.
Google Fellow Ben Gomes said: “It’s been exciting to be part of the evolution of search over the past decade, and we’re thrilled about what’s in store next. If the past is any indication, we don’t know what search will look like in 2020, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it looks nothing like it does today.”
