Right to reply: Banking hackers highlight need for extra work security

Following the recent news stories that Hackers have stolen more than £600,000 from UK bank accounts since July this year, using a variant of the Zeus banking Trojan, Martino Corbelli, Marketing Director at Star, explains the need for SMEs to adapt to the new security risks emerging every day.

In light of the recent Zeus botnet which stole more than £600,000 from UK bank accounts, we feel it is more important than ever for UK businesses to protect their data and their staff from malware, spyware and other web-based threats by having a three-step plan of Policy, Education and Technology in place.
A tight company policy will communicate the intent to staff how seriously an organisation regards the security of its data and the wellbeing of employees.
Workers in UK SMEs are most vulnerable to malicious attacks from cyber criminals, and by educating and advising employees accordingly we will be better placed to minimise the risk of an attack to the business.
Technology measures are readily available today that help protect businesses from threats that can steal confidential information, re-direct web searches, and diminish the overall performance of the network.
A multi-layered security approach ensures that phishing emails are detected and dealt with immediately before they can dupe someone to clicking on the link, and URL filtering automatically blocks access to corrupt websites.
